You have seen, I'm sure, window shutters on the outside of many homes -- they are very quaint and picturesque, and also provide much-needed protection from the ravages of the weather outside. But did you know that it is also possible to install shutters on the interior of your window areas as well? Many people don't -- and in this brief article I would like to outline for you some of the reasons why you should consider installing interior window shutters in your home.
What Can Interior Window Shutters do for My Home?
One very important reason for installing interior window shutters is to provide control over the lighting in a room. Many rooms suffer from being in a poor location: early in the morning too much sunlight may come in, while in the late afternoon or evening that same room may be too dark. Interior window shutters can help solve this problem -- in the morning the window shutters can be closed to block off the excess sunlight, and later in the day those same interior window shutters can be opened up to provide more light. And because you can very effectively control the amount of sunlight that comes into a room, your interior window shutters can help keep your room cool in the summer, yet they can be opened to provide extra warmth from the sunshine in the winter -- and this can save you money on your heating and cooling costs.
Another reason why you might want to consider installing interior window shutters is to provide privacy. This is particularly helpful if you live in an urban area -- as well as many suburbs -- where homes are located very close to each other. The use of interior window shutters can also help provide privacy if your home is located near a busy street or intersection with a lot of automobile or foot traffic. Interior window shutters also provides some measure of soundproofing, as the sound waves from conversation, music or other activities will be partially absorbed by the materials used in the construction of the shutters.
Finally, another important reason why you might want to install interior window shutters in your home is simply to provide an enhanced appearance. Good-looking window shutters will serve to show your room off in the best possible way. Interior window shutters can also be an inexpensive option to help hide the appearance of windows which are older and in need of repair.
What Design Options Are Available?
If you have decided that interior window shutters would work well in your home or apartment, what design options can you choose from? The most basic design is a standard window shutter with movable louvers. The louvers are simply small pieces of wood that are hinged so that they can be opened and closed to control the amount of light that comes through the shutters. One type of interior window shutter -- called a Colonial shutter -- is constructed using movable louvers that are 1.25 inches in width.
Be aware, however, that some types of interior window shutters are designed to be used strictly for decorative purposes -- the louvers, for example, may not move at all. Other types of interior window shutters will incorporate the use of solid wood panels rather than louvers, or those types which allow you to insert a panel which is covered in decorative fabric -- this type can be nicely matched to the color scheme of your room, and different panels can be swapped out and in at different times of the year.
Some types of interior window shutters make use of a single panel of louvers, which are moved up and down as a group; other types of interior window shutters may have two sets of louver panels -- an upper group and a lower group -- and each set of louvers may be positioned independently of the other.
Finally, a word about materials. While a traditional interior window shutters have always been made from wood, or a composite wood product, it is also possible to purchase interior window shutters that are constructed from metal (such as aluminum) as well as synthetic materials such as plastic and vinyl. An advantage of the metal and vinyl type is that it will not be subject to rotting or drying out like those which are made out of wood.
